The lighting is also important depending on the type of video it is because if it is a happy type of song, it would make no sense and be the complete opposite if they were in complete darkness. But in some videos it does work for example, in Rihanna's Only Girl In The World it is a slightly depressing song but the beat is lively and the background doesn't at all look saddening.

The Process Of Creating A Music Video
In order to create a music video there will need to be a lot things that need to be considered such as the locations, people involved, costumes, lighting etc.
The locations that are picked for the music videos are always the main thing because it is what the audience will be looking at maybe apart from the artist. It would make no sense if the song was heart-warming and slow but yet the background was in a heavy metal garage it just wouldn't fit. This is why when a video is made there is always a person who specifically picks the locations that will fit the song. For example, in Rihanna's Only Girl In The World video the location manager will have to pick the perfect location to film and in this video where she is alone in a red field perfectly fits the song. The redness of the location is spot on because it also matches her hair colour which ideally makes it the right location.
With most music videos there isn't normally just one single shot of the artist but in fact there are several different shots and angles that need to be used. It needs to be interesting so that it keeps the audiences attention, this normally involves a lot happening. The only exception is the Spice Girls Wannabe since they shot the whole video in one take. Although this is not impossible, it is extremely difficult because if one person messes up or does the wrong movement then the whole group will have to start over again. As the director said it was really difficult because it was just a simple tracking shot all the way through and sometimes even the girls managed the trip over things and even disappear from the camera. But generally in most music videos there are several cuts to different angles in the songs. Since the songs are normally about the artist then all of the main shots will be on close ups.
