What To Include In A Digipak

There are many things that need to be included in the digipak that you are creating for an album. They are listed as:

  • Name of Artist and Album
  • Track List
  • Barcode and record company logo
  • Six Panels
  • Spine - Name of Artist and Album
  • Disk Impression
  • An image of the band on the inside

The first thing that you need to add to a digipak is to include the name or the artist or the band so that the person or fans that are going to buy the album need to who's music they are buying and what the current album is. It is also very important that the album had all of the songs that are included in the the single or double CD. This ensures that the customer knows what they are getting when they buy the album.
The bar code is important because the customer needs to be able to buy the disk but it also helps the artist because it then allows them to make money from the fans buying their music. Seeing as the record company are the instruments who sponsor the people and give them all the equipment and popularity to the band, it is also important that the people who are buying this artist or bands music who it is that helped to release it.
There are variations as to the size of the digipak as they can come on sizes of six or for but for the digipak that I am soon going to be producing, means that it will need to be six sided so that we woo have enough space to dull all of the information onto the digipak, this will also include some of the information that some of the members of our group feel that we will need to include as well. On the spine of the digipak we well need to include the artist and the album name so that even if the digipak is stored on its side on standing up, either way, the customers well be able to see the name of the artist and the album.
Of course with all digipaks there has to be a space which it has to hold the CD but there are different types of holders. There are situations where there is a plastic molded shape which is placed somewhere inside the digipak which can be used to hold the disc or instead they could make a sleeve in that the CD will sit in which will lower the risk of it being damaged.
Its all good and well that the digipak has all of the relevant information on it such as the tracks that are included in the album, the artist and the album name but it may also help if it has a picture of the band members or artist somewhere on the packaging. There needs to be an iconic image or symbol on the packaging so that the fan or customer can easily recognise who the band is. For example, with The Gorillaz they haven't got actual bands members to show on their cover but they have caricatures but it is their symbol and the fans of their type of music will instantly notice the cover because of its unique style.

3 Of My Favourite Music Videos

Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity

The reason that I like this video is because of the effects that are used during the video. The video is unique because it looks as if the furniture in the video is moving by itself when in fact it is being moved along the wall to look at if its magic or an illusion. The editing of the video is very slow and there isn't a lot of cuts in the video as it is basically the same scene repeated. There are a few erects such as swirls and swipes to make the transition between the different shots. The mise-en-scene of the video is very simple because it is simply a bright white room with furniture stuck to the walls. So in terms of the surroundings of the video, there isn't much going on.

A-ha - Take On Me

Although I have only recently watched the video after doing the top 100 music videos. As I gave explained in my previous post, I explained how I love the effects that they have added into the video by having a cross-over between an animation and real life. The video took about a month to film and about 1,400 pics to compete the video. In the terms of mise-en-scene, there isn't a lot going on in this video either because most of the video is animations and comic strips with the occasional cut to real life shots. When the video switches to the real life shot the background is actually really simple with the frames of the comic there. There are a lot of edits in this video because it is a stop motion comic which means that there are a lot of pictures, as I said before they needed to draw about 1,400 which I'm guessing means there was about half as many cuts and edits.

ColdPlay - The Scientist

This is a very unique video because it is also very complicated. Although the song is going forward in the video the singer is acutely going backwards 'Back to the start'. In order to make the video work out the artist needed to find words that match the lyrics to the song but still going backwards. It even hurts my brain just thinking about it. There is a lot of mise-en-scene on this video because it shows the journey he made through the video so there is going to be loads of different scenarios such as at the end of the video he is on the car while at the beginning of the video he wakes up on a mattress. The editing of the video is rather mellow because there is a lot of taking shots as you follow his actions as he rewinds his steps to the incident.

Postmodernism - Pulp Fiction

Now those who have watched Pulp Fiction know that this film kind kind of an action thriller/comedy; mainly because of Samuel L. Jackson. This film is actually postmodern simply because the film is not split in chronological order like most films that are made today. This is simply because (Spoiler's if you haven't seen the film) coming near the end of the film we see that John Travolta dies but when we actually get to the last scene of the movie we see that Jules and Vincent actually walk right out of the diner that we could see in the beginning of the film. We are constantly reminded that the film is not in chronological order by the fact that the story doesn't run straight through and we see the film through different people's eyes.
There is also a mix of genres in this film because I believe that it is a mix of thriller/comedy/drama because its a thriller since there is a lot of killing with guns and threatening with you kind of expect from a thriller film. While on the other hand, it is kind of a comedy because of when Samuel L Jackson starts killing people but just before he does, he begins to quote to Bible to make it seem that he is the righteous person in this situation. He quotes 'The path of the righteous man is beset on all side of the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee...'
In this film you could say that there are many different endings as you see they story from different eyes. For example, we know the Vincent dies so that can be counted as one ending. We see Bruce Willis' character ride off into the sunset with his girlfriend and then there is the final ending of what happened with Samuel L. Jackson where he walks out of the diner with John Travolta even though we already know his fate later in the film.

Postmodernism - Run Lola Run

Now Run Lola Run is a very repetitive film where it is about a girl who keeps going back in time so that her friend doesn't die. So basically every time she tries to save him, he dies anyway so she goes back to the beginning of the film again and then every time she does something different to see if it has a different effect and it changes the outcome.
The thing about post modernist films the same as any other kind of movie genre, for example if you were to watch The Avengers the action film; you would expect there to be action, explosions and massive fight scenes and i bet you were not disappointed. This is the same thing with postmodernist films since in most of them they seem to be repetitive, and is a constant reminder to the audience that they are not real.
This can be seen in Run Lola Run where as soon as something happens that isn't supposed to, she rewinds time to attempt to fix it in a different way but then it still doesn't work out in the end. Another element that can be seen in postmodern films is that the film may switch to a different genre e.g. it may switch to animation, or it will switch the mood so that it is a thriller, love story or even a drama. As at the beginning of the film, we see that as Lola is running out of her apartment the film switches to an animation of her running down the steps of the flat.
Now there are many different kind of miniature narratives in a film. In Run Lola Run there isn't one simple narrative in the film because she keeps rewinding time to try and save her friend. so during the entire film we see about 10 different outcomes. As well as the different outcomes, it would seem that Lola has no morality as at one of the outcomes, I am sure that she robs her father's account or bank in order to get the money that she needs even though she first asked her father and he rejected her which forced her hand.

The 3 Most Unique Music Videos in The Top 100 Music Videos

1. Now seeing as this video is at the top of the list I have to comment on Thriller. Now I am a fan of Michael Jackson and I believe that this is one of his most influential videos and songs of all time. Everything from the opening scene to the choreography i believe has been planned and executed perfectly. Although there are actually two versions of Thriller seeing as the full version of the song lasts around 10 minutes, it seems like the best option for those people who don't have the time to watch the whole thing to be able to watch the shortened version. Funny enough Thriller was actually so huge that MTV had to show it. This was the first time that a black artist had been shown on the channel and from the amount of viewings that they were going to receive from the viewings would rocket their sales. As well as just showing the video, it could only be aired after midnight because of the graphic images that were being shown in the video. Once the music video was being shown, it could have been days or even weeks before it could be shown on TV again, so this was more like an event. According to the director while Michael was dancing around the girl after they left the movie theater, he actually improvised some of the moves.

2. Next I would have to say the next music video that i thought was actually amazing is Take On Me by A-ha. I generally like the whole idea of the video because it is half real life and half animations which i absolutely love. The idea of having someone shift from the real world into a cartoon astounds and interests me. Although the video is ingenious and very creative when the song first came out without the music video it was actually a complete flop. It was only when the song was replayed years later with the video that people actually began to realise how good the song actually was which is then when the song began to become really popular.

3. Now I think the third song in the list that is also quite memorable is Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody. This is one of the most memorable songs simply because it was pretty much the first music video to be released and then shown on Top Of The Pops. Together with the lyrics it is a very complicated songs as even the director who made the music video didn't exactly have any idea of how he was going to link the video with the lyrics of the song. It was actually said that when Freddie Mercury created the song he initially just wanted to see the results of if he just threw words into a song and see what became of it; and it was really successful. Even though most people don't understand half what of what is actually being said during the song, they still sing the galileo parts anyway.

Richard Dyer's Star Theory

The title's 'Pop Performer' and 'Pop Star' have changed dramatically from what they used to be. There has been a significant change between those who perform and those who are only known as pop stars and does not mean that they a restricted in that area anymore. One of the main reasons that pop stars today go straight to this title is because they're quickly promoted by their record labels. this can simply be done by making the artist well known by making them go to premieres, feature on a HEAT magazine. But there are other things that can affect them, such as carefully planned stories or eve a famous boyfriend/girlfriend. Seeing as pop stars are often in the limelight, it can be easy to forget about the music that they are producing and solely focus on the gossip. Although to become a true pop star you need to have left your own 'mark' so that even after you have fallen out of the spotlight, there will still be those fans or even people who will remember you; figures such as Michael Jackson or Madonna.

Although most artist's act as if they are me or you but really they are all manufactured to act a certain way. Some artist's and bands are actually made for a specific purpose to try and get a specific target audience, people and bands such as Rage Against The Machine and JoeMcElderry. It will help the artist if they have a USP (Unique Selling Point) which will try to make them stand out against the other artists who are competing with them for the same target market. Pop stars do however have the advantage over film stars mainly because most of them write their own songs and are emotional while film stars have their lines written for them by screenwriters. Dyer quotes that 'A star is an image not a real person that is constructed (as any other aspect of fiction is) out of a range of materials (e.g. advertising, magazines, etc as well as films.'
But yet the construction process to make pop stars is not actually fully understood. Record companies think that they know all about it but the matter of the fact is that this is not how they are made. TV shows such as The X Factor supposedly show us how stars are made. They perform and are then shaped to fit the kind of music that they will produce and will then get a contract and be set for life. But this is not true stardom which is actually far more complicated than that.

Pop stars are manufactured by the music industry and the record labels to serve a purpose which is to make money out of their target audience who like certain things about the artist who will then buy their records and become their fans. The record companies shape their stars to different target markets that they can make the most profit out of them as TV talent shows have shown us on many previous occasions. They will try to manufacture what they think the audience will want which is exactly why you will get many boy/teen bands such as One Direction, JLS and The Wanted. But there are those people who realised that their artists change and then do not ten  by their records. So the record company then have the responsibility to make their artists or bands seem like real people. Dyer says 'Stars are commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings'.
The music industry is well aware of the range of audiences that it can sell its artist to. To the perky pre-school kids to the ageing hippy and it does its best to try and reach all ages. One way that they try to produce different stars of different types of music is to constantly change genres of music to ensure to the younger audiences that there is always something or someone with a fresh kind of music. Another way for a star or band to have a long lasting appeal is that once their brand has been established, they can cater to their selected audience for decades e.g. The Rolling Stones. Unfortunately, stars come and go is much like a 'conveyor belt' where a star may be a new thing and be popular but after about two years or albums they will probably. If the audience focus too much on the 'oldies' it will mean the the younger generations will not identify with these stars and will see them as their parent's generation. A healthy music industry will try to reach both types of audiences, the new and the old.

Some stars may share the same cultural values or attitudes and may try to promote a certain ideology. It means that the artist will try and convey their own beliefs and ideas. This could cause the star to start their own fashion trend, with loads of their fans trying to copy their hairstyle or clothing. Stars can start or can benefit from having different kinds of means that their fans can contact them i.e. Twitter and can keep on a running commentary. Now more than ever social networking sites offer the pop stars to be able to show their own beliefs and values outside their music. Stardom and star worship can be seen as a whole culture in itself as there are whole TV shows, magazines, radio shows and websites that are devoted to the star gossip where it seems that there is never enough gossip to keep the audience satisfied.

A star begins a a 'real' person who has then made their way to stardom who already have a back story of how they reached the point that they are now. The star transformation process then turns them into a construct where the record companies can then mould the artist into the target audience that they are trying to reach so that they can make them the most money. We tend to not see them as entirely fictional  as we see them as part of a specific generation as the way that they produce their music will show the newer generations exactly what it was like when the artist made their songs at that time; as it makes people focus on 'what people are supposed to be like'. For example, women are supposed to be thin and beautiful. This means that they will support hegemony by following it or objecting it (fat/still loveable). Dyer says
'In these terms it can be argued that stars are representations of person which reinforce, legitimate or occasionally alter the prevalent preconceptions of what it is to be a human being in this society. There is a good deal at stake in such conceptions. On the one hand, our society stresses what makes them like other in the social group/class/gender to which they belong. This individualising stress involves a separation of the person's "self" from his/her social "roles", and hence poses the individual against society. On the other hand society suggests that certain norms of behaviour are appropriate to given groups of people, which many people in such groups would now with to contest (e.g. the struggles over representation of blacks, women and gays in recent years). Stars are one of the ways in which conceptions of such persons are promulgated.
basically for those who couldn't be asked to read or just didn't bother I'll break it down. Dyer explains how stars are like the icons of our society and how the stars are put into their own sort of category where loads of people look up to them. Pop stars have to establish their character and personality thorough the songs that they create and will try to go for an immediate star identity with their first album. They will generally produce about 45-74 minutes of music which will give the audience a clear indication of the artists interest, moods, appetites and lifestyle at a particular point in time

Key Features Of Music Videos

There are many different things that need to be considered whenever a band or artist makes a music video as well as what types of music that they are going to sell. Richard Dyer believes that different artists are constructed through images such as advertising, films, magazines and music. He claims that the audience prefer an artists music if it is emotionally important to them rather than the record labels trying to create a fake image for them.

Industry and Audiences
Richard Dyer also believes that the stars and artists that are made are manufactured to make money for their record labels by trying to appeal to a certain target audience. For example, Katy Perry's music is aimed to be at teenage girls and this is an appropriate target audience as she seems like a type of role model. As the record labels try to sell the different artists that they produce as they try to appeal to different target audiences. The audiences that watch and listen to all of the other types of music are seen like a market. You will need to be able to find type of music is selling the most and try to manufacture an artist that fits that market. Examples of record labels that are doing this is through Mirror branding, both Rage Against The Machine and Joe McElderry are signed by Sony Music.

Character And Personality
The artists that are being marketed by the record labels cannot be seen a being produced to suit a certain purpose they have to been seen as 'real' human beings. So in order to do this they have to make sure that they are exactly like the audience who is watching the video. An artist that shows this clearly is Adele. In her video 'Someone Like You', she is explaining in the song that she isn't anyone special and that she is just like everyone who is watching in the audience.

Andrew Goodwin
In Dancing in the Distraction Factory, Andrew Goodwin realised several different things about music videos. One of the points that were discussed is that the aim of music videos is to show specific genre characteristics that can be seen even in today's music videos. For example, in a heavy metal band video you would expect to see the band in a stage performance while on the other hand if you were to watch a boy/girl band, you would expect a kind of dance routine.
Also in most videos there is normally some kind of link between the lyrics and the visuals or the music and the visual. Sometimes there will be a link between the lyrics that a being said in the song. For example, in Adele's song Someone Like You the video in the song is simply of her just singing. While if you were to look at other artist's like her there would undoubtedly be some special effects added to the song. Although in some songs instead of the lyrics and the visual sometimes it is the music and the lyrics that are similar. Songs such as Skyfall by Adele is where the music and visuals are the same. This is because in the song the music is linked to the movie that it is supposed to be with.
Since the record label is the people who control the artists they will try to get a lot of close ups to the artist so that they can create motifs that can be seen in their videos. An example of this is Michael Jackson whose motif was the fact that he had a white glove, something that is iconic and will be remembered by the audience. The camera which is used to film can be referenced as a 'man' who is looking at the female artist. This is because whenever a female artist is represented in a music video it is mainly sexual; trying to capture the audience's eye.
Although there are a lot of main elements that are about general music videos, there are still another point that need to be considered. You will need to think about whether the music video is mainly about a performance, narrative or concept based and see how it is used in the video. You will need to think about if the video is just the band or boy/girl band performing their song or if the song is trying to tell a story behind the lyrics.

Relation of Visuals to Song
There are three ways in which music videos work in order for them to promote a song. They are:
Illustrate: Music videos can use a set of images to illustrate the meaning of lyrics and genre which is most commonly used in music videos.
Amplify: This is similar to repeatability. Meanings and effects are manipulated and constantly shown through the video and drummed into our vision.
Disjuncture: This is where the meaning of the song is completely ignored.

Narrative and Performance
Whenever a record label makes a song they will not give us the complete narrative which means that the audience will have to figure out what exactly is being said. Goodwin believes that the main focus for music videos should be to advertise the artist but every now and then the music video ignores the common narrative. For example, Katy Perry's Roar doesn't at all try to advertise her as a female artist but instead is trying to slightly tell us about being over Russell Brand. Although music videos are supposed to say something about the music and the lyrics, they are ideally supposed to have repeatability so that it makes it a lot easier for the audience to watch the video over and over again without them losing interest.
The video seems to become a lot more effective when the artist who is singing is the narrator and the participant of the song as if it seems that they are singing the song from experience or it has happened in the past. However in some videos there are lip syncing and other actions which occur during the filming of the video but the audience have to believe that it is real. I believe that in nearly every video, there has to be lip syncing especially when there is going to be a close up on the artists face to make it seem like they are actually singing the words to the song.

Top 10 Music Videos Of 2013 Part 2

Part 1: http://aarongastonrca2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/top-10-music-videos-of-2013-part-1.html

The order of the most watched music videos of 2013 are as follows:
  1. Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball
  2. Rihanna - Diamonds
  3. Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop
  4. Will.I.Am - Scream & Shout ft. Britney Spears
  5. Katy Perry - Roar
  6. Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines ft T.I., Pharrell
  7. P!nk - Just Give Me A Reason
  8. Rihanna - Stay ft. Mikky Ekko
  9. La La La - Naughty Boy ft Sam Smith
  10. One Direction - Kiss You
6. The very controversial song, Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke is up next in the list. The song achieved 250,713,270 views. This song is controversial because some people have listened to the lyrics and have believed it to be a song about rape; making women do things that they do not want to do. As well as saying that even though when someone hits on them and they say no, inside they are really saying yes. I think that one thing that does make this song effective is that it is very simple and not a lot of work has really been put into the video. All that the video contains is a couple of models who are just circling around Robin and Pharrell. Although some of the critics of the song were saying that it promoted sex and rape, the director of the song says otherwise. Diane Martel explains that the song in no way tries to encourage sex and rape but on the other hand is trying to make the women the strong figure by making the men around her want her.

7. Next is the return of an artist who hasn't made a song in quite a while. Just Give Me A Reason by P!nk ft Nate Ruess has reached the 7th spot with 247,842,895 views. I think that thing that makes this song very different from the songs that P!nk normally sings is the fact that it is very slow and very emotional. The background to the video ties in with the lyrics because she mentions in the song that "We can learn to love again. It's  in the stars" and coincidentally there is a night scene in the background. An element that i believe makes this song effective is the fact that the surroundings of the video is covered in water. And at some point during the song, we see that P!nk is swimming in the water. At this point she seems to be in a dark area all by herself where she seems to be suffocating but then a bit later she is joined by maybe her new boyfriend.

8. Stay by Rihanna ft Mikky Ekko has reached 8th in the list with 231,425,295 views. What I think the main feature in this video that makes it very effective is the fact that the bathtub which Rihanna is in at the very beginning of the song is used throughout the video. Later in the song, you could see that Mikky Ekko was at the same bathtub but instead of Rihanna being there it was empty as he was saying the words to the song "iIt's not much of a life you're living. It's not just something you take, it's given". I think that those lines simply mean that you don't realise how important something is until it is actually taken away from you. Another feature that I especially found was nicely used was the fact that the water droplets were slowed sown so that you could see the effect that they has as it ripples. But I think that water is the main symbol in the song as it is shown every time with Rihanna.

9. Coming to near the end, in 9th place is La La La by Naughty Boy ft Sam Smith with a collective of 228,783,058 views. I believe that this song has been brilliantly made because there is a hidden parody in the song. I think that the song shadows the wizard of Oz. This is simply because it follows the storyline of a kid who leaves their home and goes out on an adventure and happens to make friends along the way. One of the key elements of the video to me that clearly points this out is the fact that the kid buys a heart which the guy holds for them to meet the "tin man" who in this version is wearing am elephant costume. And again following the storyline of the wizard of Oz, the child comes to the end of their journey and all of the friends that they had acquired over the journey have the leave him behind and go back to their usual lives.

Last in the top ten list is One Direction with Kiss You which managed to get 194,703,977 views altogether. The only thing that I think makes this video effective is the fact that you can see the different kinds of environments that they are filming in and the fact that you can see how they make their videos. The song shows the contrast of them at a vacation location and then them back in the studio which shows that they aren't actually in that location.

  • Eminem - Stan - 2000
