Part 1: http://aarongastonrca2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/top-10-music-videos-of-2013-part-1.html
The order of the most watched music videos of 2013 are as follows:
Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball
Rihanna - Diamonds
Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop
Will.I.Am - Scream & Shout ft. Britney Spears
Katy Perry - Roar
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines ft T.I., Pharrell
P!nk - Just Give Me A Reason
Rihanna - Stay ft. Mikky Ekko
La La La - Naughty Boy ft Sam Smith
One Direction - Kiss You
6. The very controversial song, Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke is up next in the list. The song achieved 250,713,270 views. This song is controversial because some people have listened to the lyrics and have believed it to be a song about rape; making women do things that they do not want to do. As well as saying that even though when someone hits on them and they say no, inside they are really saying yes. I think that one thing that does make this song effective is that it is very simple and not a lot of work has really been put into the video. All that the video contains is a couple of models who are just circling around Robin and Pharrell. Although some of the critics of the song were saying that it promoted sex and rape, the director of the song says otherwise. Diane Martel explains that the song in no way tries to encourage sex and rape but on the other hand is trying to make the women the strong figure by making the men around her want her.
7. Next is the return of an artist who hasn't made a song in quite a while. Just Give Me A Reason by P!nk ft Nate Ruess has reached the 7th spot with 247,842,895 views. I think that thing that makes this song very different from the songs that P!nk normally sings is the fact that it is very slow and very emotional. The background to the video ties in with the lyrics because she mentions in the song that "We can learn to love again. It's in the stars" and coincidentally there is a night scene in the background. An element that i believe makes this song effective is the fact that the surroundings of the video is covered in water. And at some point during the song, we see that P!nk is swimming in the water. At this point she seems to be in a dark area all by herself where she seems to be suffocating but then a bit later she is joined by maybe her new boyfriend.
8. Stay by Rihanna ft Mikky Ekko has reached 8th in the list with 231,425,295 views. What I think the main feature in this video that makes it very effective is the fact that the bathtub which Rihanna is in at the very beginning of the song is used throughout the video. Later in the song, you could see that Mikky Ekko was at the same bathtub but instead of Rihanna being there it was empty as he was saying the words to the song "iIt's not much of a life you're living. It's not just something you take, it's given". I think that those lines simply mean that you don't realise how important something is until it is actually taken away from you. Another feature that I especially found was nicely used was the fact that the water droplets were slowed sown so that you could see the effect that they has as it ripples. But I think that water is the main symbol in the song as it is shown every time with Rihanna.
9. Coming to near the end, in 9th place is La La La by Naughty Boy ft Sam Smith with a collective of 228,783,058 views. I believe that this song has been brilliantly made because there is a hidden parody in the song. I think that the song shadows the wizard of Oz. This is simply because it follows the storyline of a kid who leaves their home and goes out on an adventure and happens to make friends along the way. One of the key elements of the video to me that clearly points this out is the fact that the kid buys a heart which the guy holds for them to meet the "tin man" who in this version is wearing am elephant costume. And again following the storyline of the wizard of Oz, the child comes to the end of their journey and all of the friends that they had acquired over the journey have the leave him behind and go back to their usual lives.
Last in the top ten list is One Direction with Kiss You which managed to get 194,703,977 views altogether. The only thing that I think makes this video effective is the fact that you can see the different kinds of environments that they are filming in and the fact that you can see how they make their videos. The song shows the contrast of them at a vacation location and then them back in the studio which shows that they aren't actually in that location.
