Top 10 Music Videos Of 2013 Part 1

The order of the most watched music videos of 2013 are as follows:
  1. Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball
  2. Rihanna - Diamonds
  3. Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop
  4. Will.I.Am - Scream & Shout ft. Britney Spears
  5. Katy Perry - Roar
  6. Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines ft T.I., Pharrell
  7. P!nk - Just Give Me A Reason
  8. Rihanna - Stay ft. Mikky Ekko
  9. Naughty Boy - La La La ft. Sam Smith
  10. One Direction - Kiss You
1. Wrecking Ball is the most watched video of 2013 with 474,380,247 views. I believe that the reason why this video is really effective is because of the literal wrecking ball in the video. This is also the changing video for Miley where she is trying to change her image. Although I personally don't like the video and it feels like scrapping nails when I hear it, I must say that the lyrics to the song do tie in really close to the video. For example, at the beginning of the song she says "All I wanted was to break your walls". After these words are said a wrecking ball coincidentally smashes into the wall behind her. As well as trying to change her images, she was also copying an element that was in a previous video by Sinead O'Connor Nothing Compares 2U where during the video a tear stars to roll down her cheek; Miley tries to copy this exact same effect.

2. Diamonds by Rihanna is the second most watched music video of last year with 385,022,476 views. this music video is rather telling the story of the lyrics to the song. There is many different locations that are used in the music video. There are various scenes where she is floating in the middle of an ocean but there is also a point where overlooking the mountains which is quite a beautiful sight that is also linked to the lyrics of the song. I believe that the music video is telling a narrative story, I am guessing about a past relationship that didn't work out that well. Also so that the audience who are watching the video know that it is the right one that they are watching, at the beginning of the video it shows someone emptying a pocket full of diamonds.

3. Miley is again making an appearance in the chart with another song as the third most watched video of 2013. We Can't Stop managed to reach 332,833,330 views. I think that one of the most effective things about this video is the fact that it is like all other music videos that star female artists and we are mainly focusing on how much Miley has changed since we last saw her. This normally means that the camera is mainly focused on her while she is singing the song. But there are also smaller cuts of different locations, which in this instance, Miley is at a party. I think that the lyrics 'We Can't Stop' is basically referring to the fact that she is going to do whatever it is that she wants and that there is nothing anything that anyone can do to change that. Miley is following in the footsteps of artist's before her such as Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera who also made songs that were trying to completely change their image from the innocent kids that everyone used to remember them as.

4. The next song on the list is Will.I.Am's Scream and Shout with an overall views of 327,972,661. I think that there are many different aspects of this video make it very interesting. The first point that I am going to make is the ingenious use of lighting in the video. All of the lighting is from the background so that you can see the silhouette of the dancers as well as Will.I.Am and Britney. But the background is normally kept really dark even when there were clips of various people in a club. The other effect that I am going to mention is that whenever Britney has been seen in the video, there has been an effect added to her. For example, it is like a motion blur as she sweeps across the screen. Overall, I think that the video is a bit futuristic and the song is also quite catchy which helps.

5. Katy Perry's Roar is the next song in the list which managed to get 316,019,775 views. This is the coming back song for Katy after she had been out of the music business for quite some time. Also I believe that from the lyrics in the song, it also mentions how she is completely over her previous relationship with Russell Brand. As I have quoted in an earlier post. there are specific words that could be suspect to her feelings. I think that one of the most effective things about this video is that it tells a narrative story. It explains how she was in an unknown environment and then after a while began to acclimatise to the new area and began to take control. As well as the hidden message behind the lyrics and the video, overall the song is very easy to pick up since the lyrics are very simple to remember.
